About the Role
About the Client:
Our client is a leading global innovator in the defence and aerospace sector, renowned
for their cutting-edge technologies and commitment to sustainability. They focus on
groundbreaking projects that enhance global security, contribute to environmentally
friendly solutions, and foster career advancement in a collaborative, forward-thinking
environment. This respected organisation values professional growth and offers
opportunities to make a significant impact on the industry and the world.
Position Overview:
Our client seeks an experienced Electronic Control Systems (ECS) Engineer to
support the development of a next-generation rocket engine featuring an advanced
onboard electronic controller. This role focuses on the integration of sensors, actuators,
and communication systems with an externally developed main engine controller. The
ECS Engineer will play a critical role in specifying, integrating, and overseeing the
development process, working closely with internal engineering teams, external
suppliers, and customers.
This is a systems-level position, ideal for candidates with expertise in embedded
electronics, control systems, and supplier management. Aerospace experience is highly
relevant, and while experience with space standards (e.g., ECSS) is advantageous, it is
not essential.
Key Responsibilities:
● Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers to develop and refine specifications for the main engine controller, ensuring alignment with system requirements.
● Manage the integration of sensors, actuators, and data acquisition systems into the propulsion system.
● Develop and work with control algorithms, using tools like MATLAB or Simulink for modeling and validation.
● Specify and oversee procurement of electronic systems and components, ensuring compliance with project needs.
● Liaise with external suppliers to review and refine controller designs, ensuring proper interfacing with sensors and actuators.
● Participate in the review and update of draft specifications to reflect evolving system needs.
● Serve as the primary technical point of contact for suppliers and customers, facilitating smooth collaboration between multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Control Systems, or a related field.
● Strong experience in embedded systems and control systems.
● Familiarity with control algorithms and proficiency with MATLAB or Simulink for system modeling.
● Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN bus and MIL-1553.
● Hands-on experience specifying, procuring, and integrating electronic systems, sensors, and actuators.
● Ability to work effectively with suppliers, engineering teams, and customers.
● Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse stakeholders.
Desirable:
● Familiarity with space or aerospace engineering standards, such as ECSS (not
mandatory but beneficial).
● Knowledge of VHDL for FPGA (awareness is sufficient; expertise is not required).
● Experience in aerospace or space industry projects.
● A proactive, problem-solving mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
This role does not involve designing the main engine controller but focuses on
managing its development, integration, and ensuring compatibility with system
requirements.
High-voltage experience, microcontroller design, and radiation testing are not required
for this position.
What the Client Offers:
● Competitive salary per annum.
● Bonus potential and matched 5% pension contribution.
● Life assurance cover with a defined death-in-service benefit.
● Enhanced sick pay with substantial benefits for long-term illness.
● Free on-site parking and access to an Employee Assistance Programme.
● Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD).
● Plans to introduce private healthcare options within 12 months.
