Position Overview:

Our client seeks a Senior/Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join their team. This role involves leading and supporting the design of in-house mounting arrangements for optics and reviewing mounting arrangements designed by subcontractors. The engineer will engage in requirement derivation, review, and management specific to opto-mechanical technologies and will conduct tolerance analysis, as well as thermal, static, and dynamic analysis of opto-mechanical components and systems. Design of mechanical components to support opto-mechanical system assembly and verification is expected, along with hands-on support during opto-mechanical system

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design of optical mountings, including mechanical design and analysis work on core products such as imaging packages for space and associated ground-based cryogenic test camera systems.
  • Develop new design solutions from concept through to manufacturing drawings, including material selection and gate review documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineers, Project Managers, and others to ensure all customer requirements are met.
  • Work with suppliers and customers to maintain high-quality standards throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Provide expertise in CAD and ensure consideration of design for manufacture, assembly, cost, and lead times.

Qualifications:

  • Expertise in precision mechanical mounting of optics under structural, dynamic, and thermal conditions.
  • Proven ability to review opto-mechanical designs and oversee subcontractor progression through gate reviews.
  • Proficiency with CAD packages and significant experience in opto-mechanical design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of requirements management, including compliance verification matrix, DFMEA, and risk registers.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks effectively, perform under pressure, and meet tight timelines.
  • Experience preparing design documentation for gate reviews and presenting compliance at major design reviews.
  • Familiarity with optical system design and selection.
  • Prior experience in Aerospace/Space/Defense sectors.
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards and development processes.
  • Experience with PTC Creo and Windchill, as well as performing structural, thermal, and dynamic stress calculations.
  • Significant experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
