Position Overview:

Our client seeks an enthusiastic and committed Engineer to join our opto-mechanical design team. This role involves supporting the design, analysis, testing, and assembly of optical payloads for satellite missions. Engineers at SSTL will experience the entire mission lifecycle, from concept through to launch, commissioning, and operational life, providing a unique opportunity to see your work in space within a rapid timescale.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design opto-mechanical systems from initial concept to detailed final design using 3D modeling tools.
  • Create complete manufacturing drawings to facilitate the manufacturing process.
  • Support the integration of mechanical components in clean rooms and assist with optical and environmental testing.
  • Maintain design logs and produce review materials.
  • Conduct thermal, static, and dynamic structural analysis of opto-mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Manage work packages effectively to ensure timely delivery.
  • Support manufacturing activities by liaising with suppliers.
  • Perform peer reviews of team members' work to ensure quality and compliance with standards.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the design, build, and testing of opto-mechanical systems. Relevant experience in precision engineering will also be considered.
  • Proficiency in mounting optical components, including lenses, mirrors, prisms, filters, and detectors, using kinematic mounting principles.
  • Familiarity with materials and manufacturing processes, mechanical design using 3D CAD, and finite element (FE) analysis.
  • Competent user of FEA packages such as ANSYS Workbench or similar.
  • Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks or similar).
  • Knowledge of drawing practices to BS8888 standards.
  • Confidence in solving stress, kinematics, vibration, and thermal analysis problems from first principles, with the ability to quickly grasp new technical concepts.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with project managers and customers.
  • Strong team working skills and effective communication abilities.
  • Ability to plan and manage own work, responsible for budgets and meeting project deadlines.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Microsoft Project.
